The festive season can be hard work! Whether it's choosing which side of the family to spend Christmas Day with? Trying to budget and save for all those presents and trimmings? Trying to re-arrange work commitments to attend all the children's Christmas events? Working out childcare for the holidays, whilst still providing the most magical Christmas ever! Sharing out time with the children with a separated parent? Dealing with all this is can be stressful enough, but if you add into the mix general feelings of stress and anxiety you can be looking at a recipes for a miserable Christmas.
Stress, anxiety and depression levels can often be building throughout the year, but when we hit the festive period it can really crank up a notch (or seven!). With all the pressures and planning involved, you could be forgiven for having feelings of dread over the fuzzy Christmas feeling we’re expected to be filled with.
With stress and anxiety levels said to rise by 51% or women, and 35% for men*, over the Christmas period it might be wise to start thinking of some strategies to help you combat these issues this wintertime and relaxation is the key.
Try to think about some small ways you like to relax and give yourself some self-care. Maybe you like walking the dog, meeting a friend for a cuppa, sitting in the garden wrapped up in a cosy jumper, or going to bed early with a good book? Whatever you choose, building in these little nuggets of relaxation can make a huge difference to your stress levels. And you can forget about thinking this is selfish, because when we allow ourselves time to relax we give ourselves the opportunity to rebuild our self-confidence, generate new motivation and reconnect with our inbuilt abilities and capabilities, which all results in returning to those things we need to do with recharged levels of energy and vigour to help us through.
